Welcome to Mrs. Haws' First Grade

Welcome to Mrs. Haws' First Grade Class.  I am looking forward to a fantastic school year.  This is my 21st year teaching, with the last 20 of them spent in first grade.  One of the most exciting things we do in 1st grade is teach our students to read, which these students will use for the rest of their lives.

I have been in the St. Pius X Parish since I was Baptized as a infant.  I graduated from Northeastern State University with a degree in both elementary education and early childhood education, with a minor in Spanish.

My house is zoo!  In addition to having a husband and two great children, both of whom have attended or are attending St. Pius X School, I also have a dog named Boomer, and a Hamster named Bruiser, who amuses the class on occasion.  We also board a show jumping horse for our daughter, and his name in Beau.

I am a reformed scrap book enthusiast.  My hobby has subsided a bit as most of the scrap book stores have closed.  Fortunately for me, Pinterest has become very popular, giving me nearly infinite project ideas and reasons to run to Mardel's and Hobby Lobby!
Students will have homework Monday - Thursday nights.  Homework is to be completed and returned to school the next morning.  A red home folder will be in the child's backpack at the end of each day.  Folders need to be checked nightly for homework.  Folders and all homework are to be returned to school the following day.

Graded papers will be sent home periodically in the red folder.  Please review the graded work with your child to reinforce the learning objectives.  Graded papers may be removed from the home folder and kept at home.

We will have more information for our parents regarding homework with the Back to School packet.
